What is an Iron Infusion?
An iron infusion is a way of delivering iron directly into the bloodstream through a vein (IV), rather than taking it as a tablet.
Why go IV instead of tablets?
It's indicated for iron deficiency when oral iron tablets are ineffective or not tolerated — for example, patients who get significant stomach upset from oral iron, whose gut doesn't absorb it well, or who need iron levels corrected faster than tablets can manage.
Who is it typically for?
-
Confirmed iron-deficiency anaemia (via blood test) where tablets aren't a good option
-
Adults 18 years and older, in cases where oral iron is ineffective, inappropriate, or when iron levels need to be corrected quickly
-
Common in patients with heavy periods, pregnancy, absorption conditions (like coeliac or IBD), or chronic disease-related anaemia
